Additional Proof of Residency Required for New California Driver's License

If you’re applying for your driver’s license in California for the first time, the DMV announced additional requirements for proof of residency starting July 1st.

As of last Friday, all first-time California driver’s license and identification card applications, including commercial, motorcycle and Class C applicants will be required to provide two proofs of residency now.

The additional proof is required under Assembly Bill 1465.

All of the following are acceptable documents:

  • Rental or lease agreement with the signature of the owner/landlord and the tenant/resident
  • Deed or title to residential real property
  • Mortgage bill
  • Home utility bills (including cellular phone)
  • Medical documents
  • Employee documents
