The First Cars Of The Instamotor Team

We've all had first cars. Here we remember them for what they were: Our first tastes of freedom.

The First Cars Of The Instamotor Team

It’s probably safe to say that all drivers have had that first breath of freedom that comes in the form of four tires, some doors and some seats, and it’s hard to forget the details of that magical time. At Instamotor we hope to immortalize those details with a healthy dose of transparency, as we remember our first cars and what each one meant to us.

Liz - 1996 Chevy Cavalier, Red “Miles”

MPG: 25 city / 37 highway
Engine: 2.2-liter L 4-cylinder
Horsepower: 130-hp
Transmission: Automatic

“I rear-ended another car and crunched my front hood pretty badly. I was terrified my dad would be mad and take the keys away from me, but he is a diesel mechanic and found it almost as a challenge to fix. He spent the evening in the garage buffing it out. You'd never know it had been wrecked!”

Julia - 2002 Daewoo Nubira, Baby Blue

MPG: 22 city / 31 highway
Engine: 2.0-liter L 4-cylinder
Horsepower: 129-hp
Transmission: Automatic

“We got it because it's one of the cheapest new cars to buy. However Daewoo went bankrupt shortly after I got the car. I drove it for two years in high school, then drove it from Phoenix to San Diego when I went to college. My rearview mirror fell off during my drive from AZ to SD, so I just super glued it back on. I tried selling it a couple years later but no dealers would take it for trade-in. Ended up selling it at the parking lot of a Carrow's (like Denny's) on the border of CA/Mexico for cash. When the new buyer was inspecting the car, he knocked off my superglued on rearview mirror, but paid me in cash anyway and drove off without a mirror.”

Brian - 1995 Eagle Talon ESI, White “The Swordfish”

MPG: 32mpg
Engine: 2.0-liter L 4-cylinder
Horsepower: 140-hp
Transmission: 5-speed Manual

“This car was passed down from my friend Captain Insano, to to my friend Chuy then to me. It was properly quick, got exceptional gas mileage and was reliable. Unfortunately it died with me, in a hit-and-run when we got t-boned by a light blue Dodge Caravan with wood trim. But after that I learned to always look for oncoming traffic before executing an unprotected left turn, so not all was lost.”

Jill - 1988 Ford Taurus, Taupe “The Bumper Car”

MPG: 23 mpg
Engine: 2.5-liter L 4-cylinder
Horsepower: 90-hp
Transmission: N/A

“I nannied for the EVP of Production for PBS and I would drive up to their home in my beat up Ford Taurus. There was a leak in the radiator and the fluid would drip onto the engine. It would cloud over so it would look like it was overheating. It was a great first impression into this upper class St. Paul neighborhood.”

Jon - 1982 Chevy Citation, Fecal Brown

MPG: 33 mpg
Engine: 2.5-liter L 4-cylinder
Horsepower: 90-hp
Transmission: N/A

When asked if he had any stories to share, Jon said "none that are work appropriate…"

Sy - 1988 Buick Regal, Rusty Red

MPG: 23
Engine: 2.8-liter V6
Horsepower: 125-hp
Transmission: Automatic

“Paid $800 for it. I drove it around for two weeks; then someone slashed all the tires :( Got rid of car. It had a really cool dashboard & a questionable interior color choice"

Val - 1995 Chrysler New Yorker, Black “The Boat”

MPG: 19 mpg
Engine: 3.5-liter V6
Horsepower: 214-hp
Transmission: Automatic

“Best first car ever. It was my mom's for about 5 years, we drove it to Florida many many times, then it was my brother's before we shared it when I got my license. Honesty, fricken awesome car. It was like riding on air, gas was cheap so even though it got 0 miles per gallon it didn't really matter, and we had a car in high school. Doesn't get much better than that.”

Evgeniy - 1995 BMW E39 528, Glacier Green “Lastochka”

MPG: 21 mpg
Engine: 2.8-liter L 6-cylinder
Horsepower: 190-hp
Transmission: Automatic

“My wife was unhappy about this purchase…”

Cailee - 2006 Toyota Prius, Moss Green “Buzz” (short for Buzz Lightyear)

MPG: 55 mpg
Engine: 1.5-liter L 4-cylinder Hybrid
Horsepower: 110 hp
Transmission: Automatic

“I road-tripped from Portland, OR to Claremont, CA in January of 2008 (from my parent's house back to college after winter break my freshman year) with two girlfriends. The car was PACKED with everything the three of us had taken home for winter break including a snowboard and a pair of skis. We planned to get a hotel in Big Sur for the night but when we got there every place was sold out (and this was before Airbnb). We parked the car in a hotel parking lot, put maps covering all of the windows and windshield and slept in the car with all of our stuff. It was…. cozy.”

Say what you will about these cars, but one thing they all had in common, and is apparent in our stories is that they all had character. Whether or not it's true that some cars can transcend themselves into having personalities, the simple fact is that some can shape our own.
