More than 4.9 million Californians are expected to travel this Fourth of July weekend according to AAA. It’s an increase of 1.3% and represents the highest numbers of residents traveling more than 50 miles since 2002.
“Economic growth, increased disposable income, and lower prices have spurred many Californians to celebrate our Independence Day weekend by traveling,” said Cynthia Harris, a spokesperson for AAA Northern California.
We have gathered some tips to make sure your vehicle is in tip top shape for your holiday road trip.
Tire Pressure: maintaining proper tire pressure enables for a safe and more fuel-efficient drive. Purchase a tire air pressure gauge and keep it in the glove compartment, check the PSI that’s right for your tires on the owner’s manual or the sticker on the driver’s side door. Be sure to never inflate the tires five PSI more or less than what is recommended.
Oil Check: Make sure the car is parked on level ground and check your owner’s manual for what the automaker recommends, but some will need to be checked 10-15 minutes after the engine has been warmed and cooled. Open the car’s hood and find the dipstick.
Spare Tire & Tools: All tires lose pressure over time, which is why it’s recommended to check it monthly. Consumer Reports recommends that if you drive an SUV, minivan or pickup with the spare stored under the vehicle that you check to make sure any nuts, bolts, brackets or chains holding the tire can be loosened. Once you have the tire on the ground, make sure the tread isn’t worn beyond the wear bars or that the tire is damaged. It’s possible if you have a newer car that the vehicle doesn’t come with a spare or has run-flat tires. Just be sure to know what you have so you’ll be prepared.
First Aid Kit + Emergency Items: It’s always good to be prepared, invest in a First Aid kit and leave it in your car along with extra water and energy bars or storable food. The American Red Cross has a comprehensive list of items to include in your kit.
Have a safe and happy 4th of July!
